ABOUT
Nioka Clay is the ceramic practice of artist Kerri Louisa, currently based in Queensland, Australia. The name “Nioka” carries sentimental meaning, rooted in Kerri’s childhood home in the Adelaide Hills, reflecting her lifelong connection to the natural world that inspires her work.
Kerri’s artistic journey began early, fuelled by a passion for music, drama, and fine art. After school, she recorded three albums of original music, performed internationally, and co-founded a training centre to nurture young musicians alongside her husband. Inspired by her daughters, Kerri returned to visual arts, rekindling her love for painting and illustration. This path led her to complete a Diploma of Visual Arts in 2019, where she discovered a profound and unexpected connection with clay.
Since founding Nioka Clay in 2020, Kerri has been creating handcrafted ceramic pieces that balance elegant symmetry with the organic beauty of natural forms. Her intuitive coil-built vessels and sculptures are deeply personal expressions of memory and story, crafted using minimal tools and materials to highlight texture, pattern, and the raw essence of clay.
Kerri’s work has been exhibited locally and internationally, featured in styling campaigns, and embraced by prestigious designer homes. She continues to explore the timeless, restorative nature of her craft—creating pieces that feel grounded, expressive, and intimately connected to self.
“Intuitively built by hand, my work is an outward expression of memory and story. As a restorative personal practice, I hand-roll coils of clay to create forms using minimal tools. Carefully balanced design considers the contrast between elegant symmetry and the organic nature of clay—drawing attention to texture and pattern reflective of the natural world.” — Kerri
